Xixia Dinosaur Relic Park: A "Jurassic Park" Come to Life in Henan, China

When summer breezes carry the scent of grass and trees across the southern foothills of the Funiu Mountains, a 20-meter-long Mamenchisaurus slowly swishes its neck, while a Tyrannosaurus rex’s roar suddenly cuts through the clear sky. This isn’t movie magic—it’s a typical day at the outdoor animatronic dinosaur exhibition at Xixia Dinosaur Relic Park in Henan, China. As the world’s only 5A-level scenic spot centered on dinosaur egg fossils, it has “transported” Cretaceous giants into reality, letting visitors step into a prehistoric kingdom right on the lawn.

A "Dinosaur Resurrection" on the Lawn

Beyond the red earth cave-style entrance, 30,000 square meters of lawn transform into a “Cretaceous ecosystem”: over 50 life-sized animatronic dinosaurs are scattered among woods and paths. To the left, a Brachiosaurus props itself up on its front legs, its skin folds gently rising and falling with simulated breaths. Nearby, a Stegosaurus suddenly flicks its tail through the grass, its scales glinting in the sun. Even a small Oviraptor by the path pecks at a “dinosaur egg model,” its mechanical joints moving so naturally you’d forget it’s man-made.
These dinosaurs’ skins are crafted from weather-resistant Type B silica gel (glass glue), which not only replicates the rough texture of dinosaur skin but also withstands Henan’s summer heat and rainy-season humidity—even retaining flexibility as temperatures shift. To the touch, the skin feels softly “warm,” with a faint silicone scent; paired with built-in sound systems, it’s easy to imagine chatting with these giants.

From Fossils to "Living Dinosaurs": A Prehistoric Journey

The fun goes beyond just watching: follow the path to the “Dinosaur Egg Site Hall,” where you can touch over 1,000 real dinosaur eggs embedded in rock walls. Then turn around to spot a “brooding Maiasaura” on the lawn—its belly periodically “lays” simulated eggs, letting kids hold the “dino eggs” and pose for photos, playing the role of ancient caretakers.
The park also hides “educational easter eggs” among the dinosaurs: each creature has a sign listing its habits and the corresponding fossil species unearthed in Xixia. For example, the “Xixia Tyrannosaurus” on the lawn is modeled after a carnivorous dinosaur skeleton found here, right down to the curve of its teeth matching fossil data.

Immersive "Dinosaur Day" Experiences

On weekends, the lawn kicks off interactive activities: staff dressed as “paleontologists” lead visitors to dig for “simulated fossils” in sand pits; the Tyrannosaurus rex patrols the path at set times, swishing its tail with roars—scaring kids into hiding behind parents (while they sneak peeks). At dusk, warm lights outline the dinosaurs, making them look like giants waking up in the twilight.
Before leaving, don’t miss the souvenir shop: you can buy silica gel dinosaur figurines made from the same material as the lawn dinosaurs, tucking a “Xixia dinosaur” into your bag to take home.
Tucked at the foot of the Funiu Mountains, this animatronic dinosaur exhibition turns cold fossils into tangible, living wonder. Stand in the middle of the lawn—with silent million-year-old fossils on one side and roaring mechanical dinosaurs on the other—and feel the thrill of “reuniting with ancient life” that makes Xixia’s summer unforgettable.
